INGAT! Ibang level

Beware of "Basag-Bintana or Bukas-Kotse Gangs"

Over the past few months, police authorities reported an increase in the number of incidents perpetrated by what is now called as “Basag-Bintana” or “Bukas-Kotse” gangs. Primary targets are vehicles with no trunks (SUVs, vans, wagons) parked in un-guarded parking lots or on the street); Sedans are also targetted if they notice bags or valuables left inside the car. Usual items that invite the attention of these robbers are cell phones, thinkpad bags, handbags, and other bags that may contain valuables. Parking lots around Metrowalk in the Ortigas Center have been the scene of several incidents last year. Similar incidents have also been reported in some urban cities outside the Metro Manila, e.g. Baguio, which shows that this crime is already happening nationwide.

These gangs operate in groups of three to four members. One member checks if the vehicle has an alarm, same or second member creates the initial crack on the window, 3rd member completes the breakage and 4th member removes the loot from the vehicle . Some group uses a vehicle (including taxicabs) which is parked beside the target vehicle and employs the same modus operandi.

Another modus operandi to watch is a good samaritan who approaches your vehicle after you park and tells you that there is a very strong leak under your vehicle and ask you to take a look. As you oblige, an accomplice will grab your bag from your vehicle and disappear. In some instance, a panicky person will shout that somebody placed a suspected explosive device under your vehicle which can explode any moment and ask you to leave the vehicle immediately. If any of these happens, make sure that you lock your vehicle and bring your car key TP bag, with you when you leave your vehicle.

The URL below will lead you to a YouTube video/CCTV footage showing a “BASAG-BINTANA” gang in action as shown on TV Patrol.

As much as possible, park your vehicle in well-lighted and guarded parking lots/ garages; Paid parking lots are preferred.

Never leave any valuables (laptop bags, other bags, cellphone, wallet, etc.) inside your vehicle where they will attract the attention of potential robbers.

For those using sedans, store your bags, valuables inside the trunk before leaving the office or your home and not when you park.

For those using vans or SUVs, hiding the TP bags under the vehicle seat is no longer a foolproof technique. Robbers are already aware of this. It is better to bring your TP bags with you although you have to make sure that you don't leave the same unattended. before you leave your vehicle;

Install car alarms in your vehicle. Alternatively, you can have your glass windows protected with anti-shatter film.
