Sino si Jejomar Binay

NOV. 11, 1942

Born in Paco, Manila.

Jejomar Cabauatan Binay studies at Philippine Normal College Training Department and at the University of the Philippines Preparatory High School. He earns a degree in political science and a Bachelor of Laws degree from UP.

1968
Passes the Bar exams.

He takes up a master’s degree in public administration at UP and masters of law at the University of Santo Tomas.


1970-1972
Teaches taxation and land reform at St. Catherine’s School of Nursing and Midwifery and management, political science and law at the Philippine College of Commerce.

Co-founds the Lupon ng mga Manananggol ng Bayan (Lumaban), a group of lawyers whose primary task is to extend legal assistance to students and workers arrested during demonstrations against the then Marcos regime.


1973
Detained about a year after martial law was imposed by the dictator Ferdinand Marcos on Sept. 21, 1972.

1985
Becomes vice chair of the lawyers’ group Movement of Attorneys for Brotherhood, Integrity and Nationalism Inc. (Mabini), which he helped found with other prominent human rights lawyers including former Sen. Rene Saguisag.



Feb. 27, 1986
Appointed officer in charge of the then municipality of Makati by President Corazon Aquino through then Local Government Secretary Aquilino Pimentel. He is Aquino’s first appointee in local government.



April 8, 1986
Sworn in as acting mayor of Makati.


March 1987 to November 1987
Appointed by President Corazon Aquino as governor of the defunct Metro Manila Commission.


1988
Runs for Makati mayor and wins in the country’s first elections after the downfall of Marcos.



1992 and 1995
Reelected mayor of Makati.

1998
Appointed by then President Joseph Estrada as chair of the Metro Manila Development Authority with Cabinet rank.
