Parma Update 12 noon Friday Oct 2

Eto ang latest tracker for Typhoon Parma/Pepeng.  Again, hindi ako nagmamarunong sa pagbabasa nito.  According to the picture, landfall will be Saturday morning.   Interestingly, Parma seems to be losing steam - it was originally Category 5, pero it looks  like it will be Category 3 by Saturday (so hopefully humina pa siya ng humina or better hindi na tumama sa Pilipinas).

Again, better to be safe than sorry.  So here are suggestions on how to prepare for a typhoon

Things You'll Need:
Food and water
Can and bottle openers
Plasticware
First aid kit
Flashlights and candles
Games and activities
Paper towels
Garbage bags

Instructions

Plan Ahead
1. Step 1
Determine whether you can remain in your home during the typhoon. You may be able to ride out a weak typhoon with a small storm surge but will need to evacuate for stronger storms. Listen for warnings from your local officials or weather personnel in situations where evacuation is ordered. Note the evacuation routes and plan to leave early.

2. Step 2
Make lists of television and radio stations where you can get storm information, phone numbers to call in case of emergencies and locations of storm shelters. Get directions for the emergency shelters.

3. Step 3
Designate a location for you and your family members to meet if you get separated and the number of an out-of-town relative to call to say everyone is safe. That out-of-town person starts the phone tree to others on your list after learning you are okay.

4. Step 4
Find a place to take your pets where they will be safe if you have to evacuate. Some storm shelters may not allow pets.

5. Step 5
Remember to shut off electricity, water and gas to your home before evacuating.

Assemble a Typhoon Kit
6. Step 1
Pack food that doesn't have to be refrigerated or cooked along with disposable plates, bowls, forks, knives and spoons. Each person and pet in the home should have enough to eat for three days.

7. Step 2
Store water. Each person needs three gallons of clean water to drink and to use for washing. Pets also need water.

8. Step 3
Add flashlights, oil lamps, lanterns and candles, along with extra batteries, matches and fuel.

9. Step 4
Include a first aid kit in your typhoon kit.

10. Step 5
Remember to pack board games, card decks and a battery-operated radio.

11. Step 6
Pack a box of garbage bags and paper towels.

Pack Your Bags
12. Step 1
Pack a small bag or backpack for each person in the home. It should include clothes and toiletries for three days.

13. Step 2
Bundle a blanket and pillow for each person and place them in garbage bags (to keep them dry) to take along if evacuating.

14. Step 3
Include a small bag of photos and documents you can't afford to have destroyed, such as wills.

15. Step 4
Place everyone's bag and bed bundle near the door so they can be quickly loaded into the car if you decide to evacuate. Fill the car with gas.

Only in the Philippines..
Please read excerpts from "US GIs wonder Filipinos still smiling"
Phil. Daily Inquirer Oct.3, 2009

---------
A team of American soldiers got a first-hand look at the devastation wrought by tropical storm “Ondoy” – and ended up wondering how Filipinos could still smile and give them “high-fives” amid a terrible calamity.

At least 27 members of the 3rd US Marine Expeditionary Force, composed of doctors, nurses, medical aides and a chaplain, the other day conducted a medical and dental mission at Nangka Elementary School, which sheltered thousands displaced by the massive floods in Marikina City.

“We’ve seen things here [in terms of the destruction] that we haven’t seen before. This is really the least we can do. We wish we could stay longer,” said Lt. Commander Todd Endicott, the mission’s leader.

Endicott also shared one interesting observation: “We all wonder how
[Filipinos] keep smiling through all this.”

“Americans probably wouldn’t handle this as well. Here, people are smiling, saying ‘Hi’ to us, giving us high-fives. This is a pretty miserable situation, how people keep smiling, I don’t know. It’s probably a testament to the culture,” Endicott said.
